Vinicunca or the Rainbow mountain is part of the Ausangate´s range in the southern Peruvian Andes. The mountains here are formed with colorful sediments of Iron and Copper, which give them an unique, surreal and colorful look. The Rainbow mountain may be climbed by foot or riding a horse.
The very steep trail above 4800m takes about three hours to ascend ad another 2 hrs to descend. So including the 3 hours drive from/to Cusco, the whole tour takes around 13 hours in total. Full day adventure.
The walk is classified as grade C, which means that the walk is quite long and many sections are at very high altitude (5,200 m/+ 16,000 feet). We recommend that you have spent at least 3 days in Cusco or at a similar altitude immediately before undertaking this trek, to acclimatize.
This walk is not suitable for first-timers. If you are a strong walker and have completed some moderate walks before this, then you should be fine. You will need a good level of physical condition and endurance, as you will be trekking over many steep sections.
On the mountains, at 5000 meters high we may experience different weather patterns in the same day. Weather may be quite unpredictable and rough. blizzards and storms are not uncommon.
